I, for one, have a newfound respect for Floyd Mayweather, whom I formerly regarded as a fighter who talked more than he fought. He certainly proved himself tonight. As for Hatton, I think he must learn some things from tonight, such as the concept of not getting hit. lol. Anyhow, what do you think?
I thought he was going to do it easily and Ricky Hatton had no buisness stepping into the ring with him in the first place. I’m tired of people calling Floyd this and that, but let’s get something straight. The man earned every dollar that’s in his pocket, it’s up to him to live whatever lifestyle he chooses. I’m sure if any of us woke up with 30 million in our pockets tomorrow we wouldn’t really be quite the same either. How he promotes himself is his decision as well. Wrestling refers to the bad guy as "the heel". If Floyd wants to play the heel then let him, he does it quite well. And if you look at the post fight interview he was extremely classy. Let’s get something straight he knocked this guy out flat on his feet. Stewart, Lampley, Merchant, they were all hating on him up until that very point. Floyd does whatever he wants to everybody in that ring. pacho_3 has no idea what he’s talking about because he talks about De La Hoya as being real competition. All he did against Floyd were little pitter pat pillow flurries that wouldn’t win a fight if you were in Golden Gloves, cross dress, get accused of rape 6 times, he dosen’t mention a Diego Corrales in his prime into that category. If everybody has forgotten, Diego landed less than 10 punches a round against Floyd and Floyd knocked him down multiple times that fight, it just about ruined Corrales’ career, it took him years to come back from that fight, the guy had a total melt down outside the ring after that. He’s embarassed everybody. And the notion that he’s not good because he dosen’t fight into his 40’s is idiotic. He can retire because he’s made enough money to do so. Why fight and risk your health, hands, and brains when you don’t have to? Boxing is not wussy UFC. If you get knocked down, you get back up, it’s repeated hits that are not only skilled and accurate, but also extremely powerful. Floyd’s defense is great, but he knows his speed is diminishing, his hands are getting more brittle with every year. The force and speed at which he hits, he can break his hand in just about any fight, so why risk his legacy? Old school fighters fought big names because that was where the money was at. It’s the same today. Don’t give me that old school fighters were more ‘honorable’ crap. Ali called Frasier an "Uncle Tom" but that was just a promotional tactic, nobody ever talks about Ken Norton breaking his jaw as he was talking junk in the ring. Floyd drives around in his Bentley and they call it showing off, but when he knocks people out they call the competition sub-par, blame the ref, blah blah blah. Should he retire? Yes, why get caught up in the "Larry Merchant" syndrome who’s just waiting for the Great White Hype and end up like Roy Jones Jr. People wait for you to get past your prime and then call you out. It’s idiotic. If you got speed an power, use it, if you have money spend it.
Sugar Ray Robinson was a great fighter, one of my favorites, but those were different times. Sure he had over a 100 fights but not all of those were with quality opponents. It was a different era, he did because he had to. Why did he fight Jake Lamotta 3 times? Because he got 3 paychecks that were fatter than if he had fought Charley Fusari 3 times. And let’s not forget Sugar beat his wife and was a big showoff as well.
