How long does it take to get a good fast rythem with a Speed Bag?

I have good coordination, i am 20 years old, and i am in the best shape of my life as I also play baseball at a Division 1 University.
I also wanted to know if it is possible to get decently good at boxing in general without having to pay for a trainer or an expensive gym?

To answer your title question…
It only took me about 2-3 hours to get a decent rhythm going on a speed bag at my gym. I was working with a boxing trainer at the time, but he just gave me these pointers (the rest is just practice): hit the bag with the side of your hand while making a loose fist/on the end of your pinky knuckle (think karate chop impact point), then just hold up your elbows and hands, hitting the speed bag LIGHTLY, two times with each hand and alternate. Let the bag hit the board three times between hits. Start out slow, hit and count the hits in your head or aloud, "hit, 1-2-3, hit, 1-2-3 …" and you will have it in a few hours of practice!
As far as getting decently good at boxing, that will take some training sessions from someone who knows a thing or two…(not necessarily a trainer tho)

What’s the difference between canvas and vynil punching bags? and which do you like better?

Canvas is harder on the knuckles than vinyl, I have had both with canvas you might want to use punching bag gloves, I used the gloves for both I have no preference.

How come Floyd Mayweather flinches or has temper tantrums when he hears Pacquiao’s name mentioned?

May 312010

Manny Pacquiao does not flinch, he remains calm when asked about Floyd Mayweather.

Does that mean Floyd is a piece of cake for Manny, while Manny is Floyd’s nightmare?

The probable cause is that because Pacquiao is a fighter with powerful punches and he is on the weight division with Mayweather. Further, Mayweather is on Pacquiao’s list. Pacquiao listed Barerra, Morales, Marquez, Vasquez, Diaz, Hatton, Dela Hoya, Cotto and Mayweather. 99% on the list hit the canvass or TKO’d, only Mayweather remains.

FYI: Pacquiao agreed to undertake the drug test as Mayweather demands. I am not updated as of now, on what Mayweather’s response on this issue. I hope that these two great fighters will have a match.

How do I stop a dog fight in the dog park?

One of my friend’s dogs got attacked in the park but now I’m kind of scared that will happen to my dog. My dog is a 2 year old lab if he gets into a fight with another dog in the dog park how can I stop it? Cause you know how the dogs aren’t on leashes they just run around. How would I stop a dog fight?
If I did use pepper spray do I spray it at the dogs or where?

Never come between fighting dogs – you could end up severely injured. Carry pepper spray with you. If you have a cell phone, bring that, too, call the police if that should happen.

ADD:
Yes, you’d spray it at the offending dog(s).

What is a good brand of boxing glove for heavy bag work? (besides Everlast)?

I need new gloves for heavy bag work. I personally have had terrible experiences with Everlast gloves. The first pair of Everlast bag gloves tore open (but I guess that’s understandable cause I used them daily for about 3 years.) And the second pair of Everlast bag gloves I bought I’ve only had for a year or so and they are already getting worn and thin at the knuckles. I need a good brand of bag gloves to look into. Any suggestions?

fairtex, had a pair for about 5 years now and still in good shape with pretty much daily use(stinky though)

Is there any way to suppress the vibrations from a hanging heavy bag?

Just put in a hanging 70lb heavy bag in my basement. There is a lot of vibrations through the stud into the upper floors. I don’t think there is anyway to suppress this, but I thought it was worth asking about.

What you can do is go to your basement and find two wooden beams on the ceiling. Get a strong piece of wood, drill an Everlast punching-bag holder onto it, and then drill the wood onto the beams on the ceiling. I get almost no vibrations in my house.

What is the best material to fill up an empty punching bag with?

May 312010

looking for a somewhat hard material that will harden my hands but i will not be wearing gloves.
i do expect punching the bag to hurt slightly which is what i hope to overcome
this is why i am not wearing gloves
the bag is a 35 lb (pound) size bag and looks somewhat heavy duty so i dont expect it to rip
so.. water? rags? pebbles? sand? wet rags? small rocks? bark?
Thanks

Just buy a new one. Clothes or rags will shift and you won’t get the best effect. Sand or stones will break your hands. You hands might be tough for a little while but they will become injury prone very quickly.

Being Smart is always better than being tough and not using your head. Wear the gloves. Don’t be a tough guy. I guarentee, over a period of time, you will pay a heavy price if you hit the bag without gloves. I speak from not just my own experience but that of many others. Going "gloveless" will NOT make your hands any tougher than using bag gloves. Believe me on this.

Either way I wish you luck.

Whats the difference between kickboxing, cage fighting or mma?

May 312010

I used to do kickboxing a few years ago nd was quite good at it so now i want to start again but i’ve been looking at cage fighting and mma as well. If you have any experience in them, which would you say is the best and why? They all give basically the same information (self defense and fitness). Thanks

"Cage fighting" is a colloquialism for MMA. It’s what people who don’t know a lot about MMA call an MMA fight. MMA can take place in either a ring or a cage.

Kickboxing doesn’t allow any grappling, while MMA permits all manner of throws, chokes, joint locks, pins, and reversals. They also use smaller gloves than kickboxing which have open palms and free fingers to facilitate grappling. There is generally no standing eight-count in MMA, nor is there a ten-count for a knocked down fighter. Often, strikes (mostly punches) are allowed on the ground in MMA. There is no time limit for how long fighters can stay in the clinch or on the ground in MMA, though they will be broken up and restarted if there isn’t enough action. Also, most MMA rounds are five minutes long, while kickboxing rounds are generally two or three minutes long.

How do I get my boxer to stop licking?

May 312010

Posted in boxer | 6 Comments »

We have a year and 4 month old boxer, and she licks EVERYTHING all the time. I know boxers tend to lick a lot, in fact, our trainer said they should be called lickers instead of boxers. It’s just really annoying having ourselves and our guests slurped every time she walks by, is there any way to get her to stop licking everything so much? Thanks!!

I had this problem with my Pit Mix. My trainer said that it is the dogs way of showing you affection. Odds are you encouraged this behavior without realizing it. First you need to get everyone who comes into your home in on the training. You can either do a firm "No" when she licks, but that didn’t work with my dog. So my trainer had me yelp like she hurt me when she licked me. The dog then thinks she is hurting you instead of pleasing you. You need to watch that she doesn’t develop another annoying habit to show you affection, so try and find another outlet for her. Our dog now gives us "kisses" but not by licking. She leans forward and with her mouth closed kisses us on the cheek or hand.
