Where can I find a good kickboxing class in the Metro Detroit area?

June 292010

I was thinking about joining Bally’s, but I attend school and I don’t have a lot of time. I would hate to waste money on a membership when all I want to do is cardio and aerobics. If anyone know of any good kickboxing classes or even step aerobics classes, please let me know. Thanks :o )

Can I try kickboxing if my knee is not completely cured from a sprain?

June 232010

I did 15 sessions of physical therapy because I had a knee sprain. It’s much better but I still feel something inside once in a while. Can I try kickboxing (I never did it) or should I wait that my knee feel perfect? Is kickboxing especially demanding on the knee?

wait till ur knee fully recover and get permission from ur doctor. Knee sprain is a serious problem if u didnt treat it right.
well. kickboxing will use ur knee alot, the impact from doing a strike, and running program also included in muay thai and kcikboxing.

What’s a good book or DVD to teach myself kickboxing or a martial arts?

June 192010

What’s a good book or DVD to teach myself kickboxing (or some style of martial arts)? Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds or time to join a gym. Mainly, I would like to get in fighting shape (without actually becoming a fighter). I’d also like to learn enough for self defense purposes.

Martial arts is ALL about the time you spend so if your looking to cut corners, you will be disappointed in the end.

I think books/DVDs are great supplements to regular training. Without a teacher and partners to spar/point out your flaws, your fighting skill doesn’t grow as much as it should. In my own experience motivation can sometimes come and go so it’s good to have someone else around to motivate you when your not feeling up to it.

If fitness is your primary goal you will probably be looking at diet and exercises and that is something you can google but it’s better to ask for advice from a fitness professional.

With that said, a couple books that I found to be very interesting are:

US Army Combatives FM 21-150
US Marine Corp. Close Combat manual
