What size freestanding punching bag should I get?

July 152010

I don’t know what size freestanding punching bag I should get. I’m about 5′ 6" and weigh about 135lbs. And if possible can you give me a website I can get a cheap 1 from.

Don’t get a cheap one. Invest in the best bag, gloves, and wraps you can. Go "cheap" somewhere else, because it’s your body and you need to treat it well.

What Should I wear for feet protection for a punching bag?

July 122010

I recently decided to start doing kicking alongside my punching routines with my punching bag. However, every time I start kicking, the contact between my foot and the bag tears the skin off my foot. Any ideas for what to wear to prevent this?

I agree with imacreationist, I personal don’t believe in body padding when training. The body should be conditioned to perform correct punches and kicks. Too many fighters depend on padding and are really hurting themselves when it comes to training and conditioning. Why cheat yourself? Although your shins might hurt when doing kicks they are extremely hard to break. The same goes with knees and elbows, so there is no need to pad them. Tearing and ripping of the skin is normal and is expected when hitting any object multiple times. Many traditional Karate, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Kung Fu schools use no padding when training and sparring. I personally train very old school and find it funny how so many "martial artist" believe and follow the philosophy of the arts, but deter from the training of them. Body hardening is a must in martial arts. If you don’t have that then everything else is just there for show.

This is my personal opinion and I don’t expect others to share my thoughts, but if you are into maximum training and results then i highly recommend you try it. Not saying padding is bad and shouldn’t be used if you are uncomfortable with it and are concerned about pain and injury, but it is a crutch to so many fighters. Many fighters will do moves with pads on that they will not do with pads off which really contradicts the reason for doing it at all. But, to answer your question. If you are going to wear something i would say wraps or tape but not padding.

July 92010

Am looking for a shop where to buy a good punching bag,i tried few shops like Olympics they are quite expensive.

How do you determine what weight punching bag is best for you?

July 62010

I’m around 5′4", and somewhere between 110-120 pounds. How heavy should a punching bag be that I purchase? I’ve seen 50 lbs, 80 lbs, 95 lbs, 100 lbs.. I don’t know what to go with. :P

The rule of thumb is that you’ll want a bag either half your body weight (recommended for amateurs/beginners), or equal to your body weight or more (if you’re a pro). And if you’re rich and serious about training, you’ll want to increase the size of the heavy bag and decrease the size of the speed bag every six months. Your best bet is to get a water-filled heavy bag. That way you can increase or decrease the official weight and firmness of it to your liking, and it’s much more realistic to hitting a human than any other heavy bag. Also, if you need to store or transport it, you can simply drain it and refill it for later use.

But remember, if you want jacked up product and shipping costs, as well as customer service incompetence and complete corruption and rip-off tactics, by all means order from Everlast or Title. Their business is selling cheap (and often previously used), half-broken, Chinese-made products at 5x their value, while shipping it at additional unreasonable rates, while being governed or oversaught by no one with any moral or ethical values towards keeping the company name at what it once was. Some will say that only their lower-end stuff is garbage, but it’s the same with even their higher-end stuff as well. Funniest of all, you’ll order an item when it’s on sale and they’ll confirm that the item in question is indeed on sale, but they’ll secretly bill you for the standard item price and other sneaky little corporate bullshit like that. It’s sad, really. If anyone reading this doesn’t believe me on anything I’ve said, please order from them and witness it for yourself.

Anyway, onward to the brands of boxing products. For boxing products in general, I would recommend Ringside, Ultimate Classic, and Combat Sports if you want a decent product for a decent price. Search them and you’ll find their sites or sites that you can order their products from. Although of those three, I’ve only tried Ringside, I’ve heard good things about the others. If you’re willing to shell out a lot of money for some really good gear on the high end of the market, get Cleto Reyes or Grant. Absolute top-notch gear, but very pricey.

But remember, nothing from Everlast or Title, ever. No matter how small or simple the order. Good luck.

How to make my own punching bag?

July 12010

I don’t have any money and if i ask my mom if i can have a punching bag i think she might get mad, or worried. So is there any way i can make a punching bag out of things i might have lying around at home?

get a military duffel bag and fill it with old clothes and blankets. if you pack it tight it will be just as hard, though I would highly recommend you wear gloves on your hands unless you want the skin to come off.
