Anyone know anything about punching bags or boxing?

June 292010

I’m 15, 5′11, and 127 pounds. I used to run, and do football, but when i tore my meniscus in my knee, it left me crippled and unable to play a sport with a lot of running. I was good at running and catching, but now I can’t really get a major way to exercise, and was considering getting a heavy bag? I’m not even sure, but my dad’s nurse is a boxer. So I was thinking, is boxing a good sport(does it build muscle)? If so what sized bag should I get to train? Any input would help.

Any of the bags I linked to will do great. Remember to invest in excellent equipment and to use good gloves and wraps.

Do lots of oblique sit ups, wood choppers, pushups, squat thrusts, and pull-ups will increase the necessary strength.

Pay attention to your body mechanics.

Shift your weight in the direction of the punch, twist your hips into it, roll your shoulders behind it, focus all the way through the target and snap it back twice as fast as you sent it out.

Remember to train your ability to handle stress as much as you train to hit. That way you will not freeze when you should be hitting.

Can you tell me about punching bags?

June 232010

I want to get one. I’m a physical person, and I let my emotions out physically. Any advice on brands, and how to punch them is appreciated.

Boom Boom, The two most common types are speed bags and heavy bags.

A speed bag is a small bag usually filled with air hung head high. It is designed to work on your speed and rhythm. Used mainly for hands but you can work on roundhouse and high hook kicks or any high spinning kicks. Wear light leather fingerless gloves to protect your knuckles.

Heavy bag is used for power strikes. Normally filled with rags or water. Water is better. You can get free standing or ones that hang from over head. Free standing is better unless you have a separate support system to hang it from. If you hang it from a floor joist it will rattle the whole house every time you strike it. The hanging type also swing wildly after each strike unless it is secured at the bottom also.
It is used to practice body strikes mainly. It is also for power kicks such as side and power roundhouse. You can get them shaped like the human torso. If you want to spend the extra money they can have monitors to measure your power, waste of money for what you want. Wear Martial Arts training gloves, and wrap your wrist and tape them if your going for power. Roll a wrist and it can break easy, even if you do not break i, it is very pain full.

Ever Last or Century are both very good brands. You should be able to get both for under $100.00. Google Martial Arts Equipment.

Have fun.

Robert de Sable, King Richard = Punching Bag (Part 1)

June 212010

Both Robert de Sable and King Richard can both be turned into human punching bags. When the final battle ensues, Robert takes refuge behind a blue memory wall, but there’s a trick to getting him out. Altair can’t get through the blue wall, but his opponents can, and you can grab and throw them. If you do so at the right angle, Robert, Richard, and the surrounding guards can potentially be knocked to your side of the blue wall. It really isn’t as hard as it sounds, I’ve always managed to get either Robert or Richard out, and I can knock both of them out most of the time. Those who pass to your side of the blue wall are unresponsive – they’ll let you do what ever you want with them. You can grab/throw, slash, gentle push, assassinate, and, of course, punch them. The only exception is that King Richard cannot be attacked by hidden blade, which would kill him. Similarly, it also appears that he cannot die no matter how many times he is attacked, although I haven’t tested this exhaustively.

Start the battle by thinning out the crowd. When you have a few guards left, head to the corner near Robert, and grab/throw one of your opponents through the blue wall and into Robert or Richard. Keep trying until you manage to knock him out of blue wall. You can even use some of the guards that get knocked out as new “projectiles” to get others out. Thrown guards can even “bounce” off the rock surfaces to knock others out. They are all crowded in a pretty small space, and the blue wall is actually curved (convex from your perspective), so this step really isn’t as hard as it may seem. Remember that grab/throwing causes some damage to the guard, and it will eventually kill him if you keep doing it. Likewise, countering a grab does damage, so it is usually best at this point to let them throw you.

Once Robert and (optionally) Richard are on your side of the blue wall, position them away from the blue walls using grab/throw. You can now punch these targets. If you would like to continuously punch Robert or Richard, see Part 2 of this video:

Otherwise, run in circles to avoid the remaining guard(s) and punch Robert or Richard whenever you have enough room. In this video, Robert finally dies after 2 throws and 35 punches.

Take care not to punch your target through another blue wall. If you eliminate the remaining guards, Robert will awaken from his unresponsive state to fight you as usual. King Richard’s location at the end of the battle does not affect the final cutscene.

Can MMA grappling gloves be used for training and punching heavy bags?

June 192010

I am a 16 yr old girl who is a trained 3rd degree black belt in tae kwon do. i am lookign into mma equipment for conditioning and i was wondering can you use grapplign gloves to punch heavy bags? or are there better things… i dont want huge boxing gloves thought

Only a fckin idiot would tell you that it’s a good idea, but that’s what you get on yahoo answers a bunch of stupid little 13 year old boys whose only experience is watching television.

No it’s not safe, not unless you wanna break your wrist. Those "huge boxing gloves" go over properly taped hands to ensure that you don’t get hurt workin the bag.

I’ve hurt myself on the bag a few times to know that you should always take precautions.

What is the material used to cover sparring bags and punching bags?

June 172010

Christop…
The "ridiculous" thing is that you actually thought that answer was funny… by the way, learn to spell RIDICULOUS

Leather is best. Synthetic leather is used quite a bit, I don’t mind it. I have a synthetic heavy bag. I wish I had the leather version, but only because the _fill_ is better in it.

I’ve used a canvas heavy bag as well, it was allright.
